Salary: £29,000p.a. funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund 

Location: Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, Carlisle 

Hours: 37 hours per week 

Contract: fixed term for 30 months starting in March 2026

Following a successful application to The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life has secured funding to recruit a Volunteer and Engagement Co-ordinator. 

Based in the Museum within Carlisle Castle, this role will develop our volunteering offer and recruit, manage and support our expanding team of volunteers. The ideal candidate will have excellent people and communication skills and an understanding of volunteering. This is a great opportunity for someone who likes working with people and wants to work in a role that helps make a difference to the Museum. 

We are relaunching our volunteering offer to coincide with the Down to Brass Tacks Project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund which will help transform how the Museum cares for and shares its collections, to safeguard them for the future. The Down to Brass Tacks project will recruit and train volunteers to work alongside staff to undertake a collections inventory, digitising records, condition checking, repacking and researching objects to provide a sustainable framework for future development. We are keen to expand our volunteer offer developing new roles including events, reception and administration. 

This post requires an enhanced DBS check and some weekend, Bank Holiday, and evening work.

About the Museum – Based in Carlisle Castle, Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life is home to over 19,500 objects and an additional document and photographic archive charting the history of the Border Regiment and both the current and antecedent regiments. It is the only comprehensive military collection within Cumbria, with strong connections to the local area. 

The museum is seeking to reintroduce, expand and re-establish its volunteering programme. This role will facilitate the development of the volunteer programme using our new work plan including advertising, recruiting and training volunteers to support a wide range of Museum activities including the inventory ‘Down to Brass Tacks’ project.
