About the Friends
Established in 2004, the Friends of Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life is a dedicated group committed to enhancing the Museum experience and supporting its growth. Our primary goal is to organise engaging events that not only build awareness and promote the Museum within the community but also raise funds for essential improvements, new acquisitions, and equipment upgrades.
Who we are
We’re enthusiasts, historians, and supporters unified by a common goal; to grow the Museum’s presence, ensure its sustainability, and foster a deeper appreciation for military history. Over the years, our commitment has driven us to organise diverse events, enabling the public to connect more with the Museum’s rich heritage.
Member benefits
When you become a Friend of Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, you’ll receive unlimited free entry to the Museum all year round, including all temporary and special exhibitions. This free access alone more than covers the cost of membership for most visitors.
On top of free entry, members get access to discounted tickets for our Tuesday Talks as well as 10% off purchases in our gift shop.
We also invite our Friends to a variety of events throughout the year at Carlisle Castle and across the county. These special events offer unique access, previews of new exhibits, and opportunities to engage with Museum staff and fellow Friends.
Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life also hosts an annual Members’ Evening at the Museum which gives the exclusive opportunity to see and discuss recent acquisitions before they are unveiled to the general public.
Friends can stay in the loop with upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and more with our email newsletter and will receive a copy of the Museum Magazine every quarter.

Join the Friends
Joining the Friends provides an opportunity to play an active role in supporting the Museum’s mission. The membership fees and fundraising efforts of the Friends group directly contribute to the Museum’s community engagement and improvements such as new exhibits, artefact acquisition and conservation, and educational programmes.

- Senior (over 65): £12 per year
- Overseas: £10
- Family (2 adults, 3 children): £30
- Corporate (minimum donation): £200
- Life (minimum donation): £300

We offer a variety of membership levels:
- Standard: £20 per year for an individual adult
- Senior: £12 per year for those aged 65+
- Overseas: £10 per year for those living outside the UK
- Family: £30 per year for 2 adults and up to 3 children or dependents under 18 at one address
- Corporate: £200 per year for businesses
- Life: A one-time payment of £300 provides ongoing membership for a single person

Memberships are valid for one year from the date of sign up, with the exception of our Lifetime Membership which is a one-time payment that gives you ongoing membership for life. For all other membership options, you will need to renew each year to continue receiving benefits.
Friends of Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life membership must be paid in full at the time of joining. We do not offer payment plans.
Memberships for the Friends of Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life are non-transferable. The member must be present to take advantage of the benefits.
As a registered charity, memberships may be tax deductible. Please check with your accountant or tax advisor.
