What is it?
The Youth Group is our programme for getting young people aged 14-19 involved in the Museum. By joining, young people can play an active role in the Museum while developing their creativity, collaborative skills and knowledge by working together on projects.
How does it work?
We meet for 2 hours monthly at Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life. The meeting’s activities are dictated by the project and led by the young people involved. A typical meeting involves working with a member of staff to better understand the workings of the Museum. This could be anything from cataloguing objects, developing a gallery trail or even planning an event.
What’s in it for me?
As a member, you might have the opportunity to:
- Make new friends with similar interests
- Go ‘behind the scenes’ at the Museum
- Develop transferable skills for your CV
- Plan events and participate in creative projects
- Create digital and physical resources that will be used by our visitors
- Enhance your historical knowledge and understanding of the heritage sector
- Take part in movie nights and trips to other venues, such as Carlisle Archive Centre
Previous projects include:
- Producing a short film about The Somme
- Designing an exhibition for Holocaust Memorial Day
- Planning a family activity for the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem
Testimonial:
‘I am very grateful to the team at Cumbria Museum of Military Life for the youth group as it was an opportunity for me to learn about roles in a museum, the collections and how they are handled. This became important knowledge to have when it came to coursework, research for my degree and most importantly it guided me towards aiming for a career in museums and archives. My experiences with the group have been greatly beneficial to me and I would encourage those seeking to study history to join as it is a great opportunity for you to learn practical skills – and it is great to include as part of your personal statement.’
– Frances, former Youth Group member
