The RAF in Cumbria

A brief snapshot of what the RAF contributed to the war effort 1939-46. Here in the back waters away from the front line, a string of airfields were hastily constructed. Two of these (one at Silloth, the other at Kirkbride) were huge Maintenance Units supplying new aircraft to operational airfields. The others were training units for pilots and aircrew. This is a story of harrowing losses of young men lost to the mountains of the Lake District, and the waters of the Irish Sea and Solway Firth.
