The Expendables:  The story of a specialised RAF unit in the Second World War and Beyond

Mac McNeill

Date: Tuesday 12th March 2024
Venue: Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life (in Carlisle Castle)
Doors: 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start

This talk explores the development of the RAF and uncovers the story of a special RAF unit recruited for their crucial role in WW2 and beyond.

An RAF child of the fifties with only his own memories to draw on, Mac McNeill knew little of the role his father had played in the war and beyond until, on his own retirement, he requested his father’s RAF service records.  With the help of the RAF archives, years of research followed, uncovering the absorbing story of how a lad from the slums of Ireland found a place for his distinctive skills in the special RAF unit whose work was crucial in the theatre of war and techniques in use by the modern Special Forces.

Mac’s research resulted in writing his father’s biography: Catching the Shadow.
