Border Youth

Border Youth is our programme for getting young people aged 14-19 involved in the Museum. By joining Border Youth, young people can become part of the Museum team, develop their creativity, collaborative skills and knowledge, working together on events and activities at the Museum.

What’s involved in being part of the Border Youth?

We meet monthly at Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life from October 2023 to July 2024. During these meetings you’ll meet Museum staff and learn about how the Museum works.

What’s in it for me?

As a member, you’ll have the opportunity to:

• Go ‘behind the scenes’ at the Museum
• Meet a variety of professionals and make new friends with similar interests
• Enhance your knowledge of the Museum sector and military history
• Develop transferable skills for your CV
• Gain practical, hands-on experience with our collections
• Take part in movie nights and trips to other heritage sites
• Plan events and participate in creative projects, including the Arts Award

Previous projects include:

• Producing short films e.g. The Somme
• Designing exhibitions e.g. The Holocaust Memorial Day
• Meeting a variety of specialists and much more…

‘I am very grateful to the team at Cumbria Museum of Military Life for the youth group as it was an opportunity for me to learn about roles in a museum, the collections and how they are handled. This became important knowledge to have when it came to coursework, research for my degree and most importantly it guided me towards aiming for a career in museums and archives.
