Project Brief – Artist in Residence
Background: The museum is putting together an exhibition about the history of the Regiment whose collections we hold – ‘A History of the Regiment in 100 objects.’ As part of this exhibition, we will be marking the 60th anniversary of the formation of the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment which took place in October 1959.
We are keen to collect quotes and memories from former soldiers of the Regiment for our archives, some of which will be used within the exhibition. These will be collected at our annual Regimental weekend which takes place in May at Carlisle Castle.
As part of this commemorative year, we are keen to produce a piece of art inspired by the Veterans’ experiences. This piece of artwork will be incorporated into the exhibition.
What are you being asked to do? We are looking for an illustrative artist who will be inspired by stories, photographs and objects. We want someone who can develop ideas within the Museum, talk to veterans, their families, the public and be creative. We would like the artist to take the ideas and inspirations and develop them into a piece of 2D art (A1 size) which can be displayed within the autumn exhibition and used by the Museum to highlight the more personal stories from our Regimental history.
Budget: Freelance fee of £1,000 (inc. VAT) including materials.
The fee will be paid in two instalments. The recipient will be responsible for their own tax and national insurance contributions. Evidence of tax status must be provided. The fee is inclusive of travel and living costs.

Please note that due to time restraints the Museum will not have time to visit individual websites. Due to anticipated volume of applications no feedback can be given for unsuccessful applicants.

The project completion date is 31st July 2019.
Timescale: The Regimental weekend takes place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 2019. We expect the successful candidate to be based at the Museum on both days – from 1000 to 1700hrs on the Saturday and 1000 to 1500hrs on the Sunday – to gather material and talk to the veterans. You will be working alongside the Learning & Access Officer who will be collecting information for the Museum archives.
The final piece can be completed off-site but must be finished by 31st July 2019. The final artwork and copyright will belong to the Museum.
