Somme Poppy Patterns
To commemorate each soldier from the Border Regiment who lost their life during the Somme campaign, a poppy will be made and displayed in an art installation at Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life. One hundred years ago, communities at home knitted and crocheted ‘comforts’ for soldiers and to recreate the same support the poppies will be knitted or crocheted by communities across the County. Supported by the Women’s Institute, we are encouraging residents of Cumbria to make 1700 poppies which will contribute to a living memorial at the Museum. From 1st July to 18th November, poppies will be attached to rolls of jute which will be unfurled daily to represent the amount of soldiers killed during the 141 days of the campaign. By the 18th November, the Museum will reflect the contribution these men made and provide a sobering reminder of the impact of the Somme campaign on the local population.
Any additional poppies made will be sold in aid of the British Legion.
