Journey to the Raj: A Soldier’s Life in India 1820 – 1947
The exhibition tells the story of the County’s infantry Regiment, the Border Regiment and its predecessors, the 34th (Cumberland) and 55th (Westmorland) Regiments of Foot on the Indian Sub-continent and their role protecting the trade from India with a strong military presence to protect British rule.
The bureaucratic colonial rule on Indian people became crucial to the wealth of the British Empire and the Regiment spent long periods 5000 miles away from home in India.
The exhibition focuses on the experience of the soldiers and their families using the Museum’s extensive documents, photographs and archives. Due to the vast areas that the different Regiments served no two experiences were the same.
The Exhibition is open in normal Museum opening hours from 8th July to 29th October 2017 and is included in standard Museum admission. The Exhibition will be closed on 16th & 17th September 2017. We are sorry for any inconvenience.
